Vazhakkai Podimass (Raw Plantain Crumbled)

This is from the cookbook which my mom gave me. This is a traditional tamilian brahmin food and I love it. Its so good with rasam (I am soooo drooling).


Raw Plantain – 2
Salt – 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder – 1/8 tsp
Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
Curry Leaves – 1 stem
Asafoetida Powder – 1/8 tsp
To Roast and Grind
Bengal Gram dal – 1 tbsp
Black Gram dal – 1 tbsp
Red Chilli – 2



  1. Choose well matured raw plantains. Cut them into halves, immerse in water and cook. Drain the water and let cool. Remove the skin and stalks and crumble it. Add the salt and turmeric powder and mix.
  2. Dry roast bengal gram dal, black gram dal and red chillies and grind coarsely.
  3. Heat oil in a kadai and splutter mustard seeds, add the curry leaves, stir and then add the crumbled cooked raw plantain, asafoetida powder, stir and cook to heat it through. Add the ground masala powder and mix well.
  4. Transfer to a serving dish



The plantain can be also cooked in the following ways:

  • Smear it with little oil and directly roast on a open flame until the skin is charred and the vegetable is cooked.
  • Bake it in the oven
  • It can also be grated and then boiled.
